Fall Home Show Speakers

  • Mark Cooper, President, Shakespeare Homes & Renovations Inc.

On the North Shore in a family of artists, Mark found his interest after taking the construction course at Carson Graham high school in 1983, before graduating from the BCIT construction program.

A journeyman carpenter and a home construction contractor for more than 20 years, Mark incorporated Shakespeare Homes in the early 1990’s.

For several years, Mark took time to help launch a high-tech company into the number one seller in North America, dealing with Fortune 500 companies. This means he brings to Shakespeare Homes both financial stability and solid professional experience in working through business issues.

As a long-standing member of the GVHBA (Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association), Mark is a Director of their Board for many years, also serves as the Chair of its Renovation Council and is active in its seminars and training events. As well as mentoring newer construction companies and trades, he is supporting the school district’s on-site introduction to construction by hosting regular site-progress visits for grade 11-12 students. Mark also has a keen interest in building science and energy efficient techniques as a Built Green and Energy certified builder.

For more information on Mark or his company, please visit Shakespeare Homes and Renovations.

  • Kathy Yuen, Senior AT, President & CEO, Phase One Design

Kathy is an Architectural Technologist and Principal of Phase One Design. Her award-winning design firm has been working with homeowners for 11 years and has helped over 500 clients successfully design and plan their new custom home projects. Her area of expertise is in designing and planning “tear down & new build” custom home projects. Kathy has over 16 years experience and is a frequently featured speaker at industry events.

  • Babak Nikraftar, Director of Construction, Project Mint Developments

Babak has been versed in the Vancouver construction & property development sector since 2001. After completing his BCIT B.Tech in Construction Management, he started his career working as a technician on the remediation of “leaky condos”, exposing him to the consequences of failed construction methods/details.

Babak then followed his passion for design and creativity which lead him to work on new-build high-rises and condominiums. Employed by Cressey Developments & Mosaic Homes, his roles spanned from site superintendent to handing out the keys of a customer’s new home. This exposed Babak to all the steps involved in property development, from land acquisition to project delivery.

In 2014, Babak took the initiative and gambled on his skill set and contacts to team up with an architectural colleague and formed Project Mint Developments: a boutique-builder/developer that designs and builds sustainable performance homes. In this short time period, Project Mint has managed to be recognized for Georgie & Ovation Awards. A former member of the U40 Committee himself, Babak continues to remain active in various GVHBA forums.
